Since 2002 more than 1,100 students have earned university credit for their involvement in the ISV Program. Many former students describe earning academic credit for their ISV Program as an incredibly powerful and worthwhile learning experience.
Participants from North America:
There are several options available to North American students to earn academic credit for their participation in an ISV program. ISV is very pleased to be working with two institutional partners in the USA who will offer transfer credits to interested students from North America. Upon approval from their home institution, eligible students can earn up to three semester credits or four quarter system units (one full course) for their Volunteer Project through one of ISV's partner universities via credit transfer. Course outlines, specific requirements and tuition fees are determined by the credit-granting institution and will vary depending on the option you choose. Please note that it is the student's responsibility to seek approval for the transfer credits from their home institution. Students are also strongly encouraged to seek advice from an academic advisor regarding how any of these courses will apply to their degree.
Earn academic credit through one of the following universities/options:
1. Auburn University. Course: "International Issues in Natural Resources Management" OR "International Issues in Community Development". For enrollment instructions, course outlines and detailed information click here.
Current Auburn University students please note: You must register for Auburn Abroad through the Office of International Education www.auburn.edu/oie/. Please bring your acceptance letter from ISV to the Office of International Education (OIE) when you register. Contact the OIE office (334-844-5001) or Dr. Morse (334-844-8086 or AuburnISV@auburn.edu) in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences (www.sfws.auburn.edu/) for more information.
Additionally, short course descriptions are available here:
Please note: that if you choose to register for academic credit with Auburn University, you will be placed on an approved project with a qualified academic credit supervisor (Project Leader). Deadline for enrolling to earn credit with Auburn University is 65 prior to your departure.
2. University of California Irvine. Course: "Engaging Globally"
3. Independent study. A third option is for students to apply to earn independent study through their home institution. Students can take the ISV Program information and sample syllabus to their professor, advisor or faculty member and work with him/her to design a highly individualized independent study course in the field of conservation, community development or any other relevant topic. Last year, students from more than 140 colleges and universities in the USA and Canada were able to earn independent study or internship credits from their home institution for their participation in an ISV program.
ISV will send additional information about earning academic credit through one of our partner universities, or through independent study, to all applicants who indicate their interest on their application form. You can also request the information by contacting us at academiccredit@isvonline.org. Information will include step-by-step guidelines for applying to earn credit as well as course outlines.
