Day 1 -- Travel to Lima and onward to Cusco, a fascinating colonial city that was once the capital of the powerful Inca Empire and designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. We'll spend the afternoon on a guided walking tour getting to know the city's cobbled streets and architecture, an interesting fusion of Inca and Spanish styles, including visits to the Peru Machu Picchu Tour Qorikancha temple ruins and Catedral, one of the most famous baroque-style churches in the Americas, built atop the foundations of an old Inca palace. In the evening, we convene at La Retana restaurant for a welcome party at a, where we will be treated to a night of traditional music and dance, and a buffet of regional specialties. Spend the night in Cusco and get ready for the next few days of adventure trekking.

Day 2 -- Rise early to depart Cusco via a scenic drive to the small village of Marcocasa, located high above the Apurimac River. Here, we meet the mules, horses, and arrieros (wranglers) that will carry our gear and accompany us during the trek. After introductions and a hearty lunch, we begin a gentle hike into the Green River Valley of the Cordillera Vilcabamba, hiking steadily upwards Peru Machu Picchu Tour to the high plateau. Within the first hour, we'll get our first glimpses of the impressive Huamantay peak (5917 m), and as we make our way to the campsite at Soraypampa, incredible views of the enormous snow-capped Salkantay (6270 m, the highest in the Vilcabamba range) dominate the skyline. Tonight we camp at the base of the mountains.

Day 3 -- After breakfast and packing up (we'll always send heavy gear with porters, carrying only a daypack as they hike), we'll follow a series of switchbacks up the side of a mountain beneath the shadows of the grandiose Mount Salkantay, making a stop at a scenic high pass flanked by mountains on every side. From here, we make our way downhill toward the valley below to camp for the night at Chaullay.

Day 4 -- The third day of trekking leads us down the eastern slope of the Andes into a sub-tropical valley, with a noticeably warmer climate and a variety of orchids, other plant life, and hummingbirds. After a morning of hiking, we make our way to the lovely Colpapampa natural hot springs for a rejuvenating dip. Continuing through the Ceja de Selva ("Eyebrow of the jungle"), we encounter a variety of lush tropical flora, fruit and birdlife. Tonight we camp in the tiny valley village Playa.

Day 5 -- Peru Machu Picchu TourOn the final day of hiking, we continue through sub-tropical vegetation, crossing rivers and passing waterfalls as we make our way to the village of Lucmabamba, where the original Inca Trail remains. A gradual uphill climb through lush forest brings us to Llactapata (2700 m), where we enjoy a brilliant, unique view of the backside of Machu Picchu and surrounding peaks. In the afternoon, we take the hydroelectric train to the town of Aguas Calientes, where we'll spend the night in a comfortable hostel just outside the National Park.
